Civil registration in Ireland began in 1864. Before that the principal source for births, maniages and deaths is parish records. However many of these are available only in Ireland, most are not indexed and almost a thousand parish books were destroyed in the Four Courts fire of 1922. Newspaper notices therefore fill an important gap in the records available to a genealogist from abroad. Moreover, notices sometimes provide more information than entries in parish records (See A Typical Notice).
